ARMATURE WINDING

ARMATURE WINDING

In DC machine, the drum type armature winding are used. It is usually a former wound copper coil, which rest in armature slots. The armature conductor are insulated.

THERE ARE MAINLY TWO TYPES OF ARMATURE WINDING

1)    Lap winding

2)    Wave winding

1)    LAP WINDING

In the lap winding,The coils is connected in series through the commutator segment in such a way that the armature winding is divided into as many parallel paths as the number of poles of the machine, i.e. In the lap winding number of parallel paths is  equal to the number of poles.

“Lap winding” is suitable for large machine which has high current and low voltage.

Two types of lap winding “simplex lap winding” and  “duplex lap winding”

2)    WAVE WINDING

In the case of wave winding, The armature coil connected in series through the commutator segment in such a way that the armature winding is divided into two parallel paths irrespective of the number of poles.

“Wave winding” also known as “series winding”.

This type winding suitable for small machine, in which low current and high voltage.
